Scion iQ Looks Better than Smart

In a downsized economy, less is more and sometimes big things come in small packages, 10-foot-long packages. Standing not so tall, measuring at just over 59”, Scion’s 2012 “premium micro-subcompact” is just that, a big step to downsizing for American consumers.

At a whopping 66.1” wide and weighing in at 2,127 lbs, the newest addition to Scion’s family geared to young buyers and urbanites is all about “intelligent quality,” appropriately titled the iQ.

Simple and straightforward, Scion’s subcompact creation adds new “IQ” to the generation of smart cars with its concentrated design for intelligence, innovation, individuality, and quality.

The Beat was there in refreshing Palm Beach, Fla., for the iQ’s press preview and there are a lot of cool features about this little bundle.

The iQ starts at less than $16,000, an MSRP of $15,995 (which includes delivery fee).
It has a 1.3-liter, 94-hp engine and a combined mpg of 37, which is economically savvy in today’s gas consumption but a little low for a car of this size.

The modern look of the iQ, described as “Techno-Organic Design,” is slick and spunky. The exterior is clean and simple including elongated front headlights that give the illusion the nose of the car extends beyond its compact size.

Alloy-finish side mirrors with mounted turn signals, an LED brake light mounted above rear window wiper and extended A-pillars to help create an open passenger cabin modernize its design. Inside, the less-is-more motto continues with a black dash and door tops.

Front seat bottoms are form fitting and covered in a deep gray cloth patterned with light gray ovals. The leather-wrapped manual tilt steering is lined with red-stitching and features a flat-bottom for optimal leg room with audio controls and mode button.

Interior features include front console cup holder, two rear cup holders, four 25 oz. drink bottle holders, remote keyless entry, auxiliary 12v power outlet, first aid kit, rear window wiper, sun visor mirrors, and electric rear hatch release.

One possible disadvantage of the sleek look is the speedometer display, which is challenging to read with its positioning slightly tilted on its side and can be a bit distracting when trying to gauge speed while driving.

The Scion drive monitor, placed left of the speedometer, is a little cluttered to read, displaying fuel level, instant/average fuel mileage, average speed, outside temp, resettable trip meters, odometer, digital clock, and CVT indicator.

The iQ’s interior is also modified to accentuate the theme of “Big Ideas Concentrated” with an asymmetric dashboard and seating design. Center console is clean and simple with a single air conditioning dial, an LCD display, and audio CD slot. The 3+1 seating, driver, two adult passengers, and the fourth seating position behind driver ideally intended as room for a child, makes the iQ the world’s smallest four seater.

Engineering behind the iQ relies on the idea that “a car should not be any bigger than it really has to be.” With this idea in mind, six engineering innovations make the iQ possible, such as a flat gas tank housed beneath the floor reducing rear overhang and slim-back front seats for optimal rear legroom.

These innovations also allow for Scion’s new subcompact to maintain as much extra space as possible for a car of its size. A mini storage bin is placed under the front passenger seat and the 50/50 folded seatbacks give the option of riding with a third passenger as well as storage space.

The rear cargo floor is formed by the lid of a removable storage tray, hiding the second storage area formed in Styrofoam that holds owner’s manual, first aid kit, and tire repair system. The backseat completely folded forms a flat cargo surface. iQ’s maximum EPA cargo capacity is 16.7 cubic feet and with rear seats upright the iQ has just over 3.5 cubic ft of cargo space.

Still, for claustrophobics and urbanites traveling outside of the inner city, the-little-car-that-can isn’t a realistic option to pack enough storage space for anything that requires extra room for three or more passengers and luggage such as camping equipment.

Nevertheless, for those driving a local distance with little baggage the iQ is easy to drive and easy to park with a turning radius of 12.9 feet with electronic power steering.

As part of the personalization options the iQ offers three audio systems, Standard, Premium, and Navigation.
Standard Audio includes Bluetooth hands-free and audio, HD radio, scion sound processing, USB/AUX, steering-wheel mounted controls, CD player with mp3 and WMA capability, four speakers, two in center console and two full range mounted in doors.

Premium Audio includes all standard features plus 200 watts max power, 5.8” TFT touch screen, Pandora internet radio capability, album art, iTunes Tagging, and six RCA outputs.
Scion Navigation System Audio includes all standard features plus 7.0” touch screen, iTunes tagging, six RCA outputs, DVD player, ipod video via USB connector, full navigation system GPS based on SD card, and video input for connecting with aftermarket backup camera.

iQ owners also have a choice of two wheel covers, 16-inch steel wheels, or 175/60R-16 all season tires. More dealership accessories available are fog lights, alloy wheels, lowering kit, rear spoiler and whatever personalizing ideas the buyer can imagine.

With its “mini-me” capabilities, the iQ stands apart from the subcompact prototype, making the iQ a unique city car of its kind.
Driving the urban minded car is a quiet ride, especially for a car that looks like it’d be swallowed up by the road. This is thanks to an acoustic windshield built to decrease sound frequencies.

As far as safety features for a little car in a big world, the iQ’s Star Safety System includes anti-lock braking system, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, smart stop technology, traction control, and enhanced vehicles stability control. It also boasts the most airbags in the industry with 11 standard airbags, including the world’s first rear window airbags.

The micro-subcompact car segment is redefined by the iQ as Scion introduces its concept of “New Urbanism,” a vehicle for a more progressive buyer whose transportation needs and desires are changing
with today’s evolving concerns like consumption control and the environment. This will launch Scion’s niche for innovation into another element of authenticity, community and personalization for the rising generations of buyers and although a few tweaks may prove necessary, the iQ is definitely a big step for subcompact kind.

Be sure to look out for the iQ, which will be released in waves starting on the West Coast, dipping down into the Southeast and Gulf states area, followed by New York, then completing its sweep in the East Coast and Midwest in March.

VW Taking a Shot with e-Bugster

Volkswagen has had lofty ambitions of improving its market position in the U.S. and worldwide.
So far, its vehicles haven't quite followed along.
So at this year's Detroit auto show, it rolled out something called an e-Bugster. That sounds like a shopping cart with a tablet computer attached. It doesn't quite look that good, though.

Observers said that basically, this is a Bug with an electric motor.
If The Beat gets an up close look, we'll be sure to report back. For now, consider us underwhelmed.

Cadillac to Make ATS Luxury Compact

Cadillac recently announced, at the Detroit auto show, that it will build the ATS, a new compact luxury sedan.
This is exciting, as this field is showing momentum now with automakers realizing that people who want a compact car with good fuel economy might also want luxury.
This car should compete nicely against the BMW 3-Series and the Audi A4, among others.

BMW Expanding Capacity, Workforce in S.C.

There's more good news for the Southeast's thriving automotive manufacturing industry, as BMW says it will add to its plant in South Carolina and tack on 300 more jobs.
The German luxury brand will invest an additional $900 million in the plant in Greer and accelerate production of its new X4 model, the Associated Press reports.
The company recently reached the 2 million vehicle milestone at the plant, which began production in 1994.
AP said BMW projects production of up to 300,000 cars a year with 7,500 employees at the plant.
In August, BMW said it had adopted a six-day work week to increase production.

The Hyundai Elantra edged out the Ford Focus and Volkwagen Passat Monday to win the 2012 North American Car of the Year award.

The prestigious industry award was announced at the start of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, which hosts media previews this week and opens to the public on Saturday.

The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque won the North American Truck of the Year, beating the BMW X3 and Honda CR-V. The Evoque, which starts at $43,995, gets an estimated 18 miles per gallon in city driving and 28 mpg on the highway.

Jaguar Land Rover North America President Andy Goss said it's a tremendous honor and humbling for the company, which has had had finalists but never a winner in the 19th annual independent awards program.

"We're going to market the hell out of this," said a smiling Goss on a stage above the four-cylinder sport-utility vehicle. The U.S. is the world's largest Range Rover market.

Fifty automotive journalists voted on the winning vehicles from a group of finalists, and the vehicles must be all new or substantially changed to be eligible. Organizers accept no advertising, though automakers capitalize on the marketing value of the honors.

John Krafcik, Hyundai's North American CEO, said the award won't help the compact's sales much because the company already is selling as many Elantras as it can make at its factory in Montgomery, Ala. But the award should help solidify the brand's image in the eyes of the American public, especially in the highly competitive compact car segment.

"It should be helpful for our brand going forward," he said.

The Elantra, which starts at $16,445, gets an estimated 33 mpg.

The company is looking at ways to boost production at the Montgomery plant, but Krafcik said Hyundai plans to focus on maintaining quality at the factory before deciding on any increases.

Hyundai sold more than 186,000 Elantras last year, nearly a 41 percent increase over 2010 figures.

For example, if your vehicle is worth $5,000, but you still owe $7,000 on the loan, then you are upside-down by $2,000. So if you were to trade in that car and buy a new one in this scenario, you would essentially be adding $2,000 (the upside-down amount) to your new car loan, and adding debt onto debt is a dangerous game. It's better to wait until you are right side up and then look into buying a new car.
Negotiate your trade-in value on its own. The way to ensure you get the best deal on both your new car and your trade-in is to negotiate the two deals separately. Sometimes, the dealer will try to get you to negotiate for your trade-in and the price of your new car together. That way they can do things like offer you a great deal on the new car, but then short you on the trade-in. But if you negotiate the two as separate transactions, you can ensure you're getting the best deal on both.
Get a car wash! Make sure your car is primped, pretty, and ready for a thorough look over. The dealer will inspect your car and you want to present it in the best light possible. And on that note, be honest about the condition of your car! If you try to slip one by the dealer and they catch it (and they will), it will just cause trouble you don't want.

These tips will help you get the best deal on your trade-in, which in turn helps you get the best deal on your new car. New Models to Keep an Eye On

The new year will bring some hot new models to the vehicle market. Here is a list to keep an eye on.

Chevrolet:

		The 2013 Chevrolet Spark comes from overseas to become the latest addition to the Chevy lineup, joining the Cruze and the Sonic to give the Bowtie a formidable presence in the small car segments. The Spark falls into microcar territory and competes against cars like the Fiat 500 and coming Scion iQ. It will feature four passenger doors and more cargo room than both, and there is even an electric version for those looking to go green.

Ford:

		Ford's redesigned 2013 Ford Escape made its world debut at the 2011 LA Auto Show. The Escape drops the hybrid option in its latest compact crossover offering, but offers up a pair of EcoBoost engines that should give the Escape class leading fuel economy. It also gets some impressive features, like a class-exclusive power liftgate that you can open with no hands.

Honda:

		After giving a makeover to one of its best-selling models earlier this year in the Civic, Honda keeps the ball rolling with the redesigned 2012 Honda CR-V.Honda is hoping to keep its place at the top of the compact SUV/crossover heap.

Mazda:

		The 2013 Mazda CX-5 is Mazda's new entrant into the competitive compact crossover market. The CX-5, which made its North American debut, will feature Mazda's new Skyactiv engine technology so expect great fuel economy to go along with that indefinable Mazda fun-to-drive factor.

Toyota:

		Toyota has expanded the Prius family for this year and we had a chance to check out the bigger, more versatile 2012 Toyota Prius v at an event in Charlotte. The Prius v keeps a lot of the same characteristics that made the original Prius so popular and adds on wagon-like utility. Georgia authorities have created a smartphone application that aims to reduce drunken driving during the coming New Year's Eve and Super Bowl celebrations.
The Governor's Office of Highway Safety has made a list of free sober ride operations in the new app, called Drive Sober Georgia.
The office said it hopes to make getting a ride as easy as possible for motorists who are impaired by alcohol.

Infiniti EX35 is Fun Luxury Crossover

It seats five, has plenty of power and offers great safety and technology features. Plus it's pretty fun to drive.
It is the 2012 Infiniti EX35 crossover SUV.

The EX comes in base or Journey trim levels and features a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that makes 297 horsepower and is linked to a seven-speed automatic transmission.
As a crossover, the EX sits on a car-based chassis and gives a sharp, almost sports car-like ride with its four-wheel independent suspension. The standard drivetrain is rear-wheel drive, but all-wheel is also available.
The EX gets 17 mpg in the city, 24 highway.
The interior of the EX is comfortable and neatly designed. Leather seating is standard. Infiniti says there is 88.5 cubic feet of passenger volume and 18.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seats. Passsengers in front should have plenty of head and leg room, but those in the back might be just a bit cramped.
Standard features are automatic dual-zone climate control and heated and powered front seats.

Chevrolet appears to have a problem on its hands with its Volt plug-in hybrid. It seems as though many owners of the sedan have reported overheating and melting of the cord used to charge the car from standard 120-volt household electrical sockets. While GM says the cords are safe and blames the problems on the owners’ wiring, it has replaced an unknown number of cords and made changes to its design, Yahoo News reports.

The cord that plugs into household outlets is an alternative to charging stations that Chevrolet suggests Volt owners install at their homes.

Plug-in This Prius for Even Better Fuel Economy

Let the confusion begin anew! Despite the rising popularity of hybrid vehicles, many people still seem to think that you have to plug them in.
      Generally, you don't.
      Unless, that is, they are plug-in hybrids, which are beginning to gain popularity (a la Chevrolet Volt).
      Toyota is unveiling its new Prius Plug-in, a variation of its now venerable hybrid car.
      The ones that came before could not be plugged in. Sales of those models will continue.
       This one, however, runs on gasoline and electricity, just like the previous Prius, but the source of the electricity can now come from a wall outlet or charger.
      Got all that?
      Toyota says the Prius Plug-in will go on sale in March in 14 states: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington. In 2013, it will be sold in the rest of the states.
       The Plug-in has a manufacturers' suggested retail price of $32,000, according to Toyota's website. But that may vary depending on how it is configured.

Chrysler Adding Jobs, Boosting Production

Chrysler announced last week that it will add 1,100 jobs in Ohio as it ramps up production of its Jeep Liberty SUV.
The automaker is investing $1.7 billion as it plots future production, and says it wants to build the strength of its Jeep brand in North America and globally.
"It's becoming probably the star of the European market," CEO Sergio Marchionne said. "I have similar expectations for Jeep ... in the eastern part of Europe, Russia and China."

Toyota Rolls 'Em Off the Line in Miss.

Toyota announced that it has begun production of its Corolla compact sedan at a new plant in Blue Springs, Miss.
Toyota now has 14 plants in North America that build 12 models.
The Mississippi plant was scheduled to begin production in 2010, but was delayed by the economy, Toyota said. It will employ nearly 2,000 people by next year.
Toyota is just the latest auto manufacturer to start or expand vehicle production in the Southeast.
Kia builds vehicles in West Point, Ga., Hyundai has a plant near Montgomery, Ala., Volkswagen recently opened up shop near Chattanooga, Tenn., BMW has long operated near Greenville, S.C., Nissan builds in Mississippi and there are others.

Love Its Looks or Hate It, You Can't Deny the Nissan Juke is a Sporty Little Rascal

As Nissan's smallest crossover, the Juke occupies a unique position, not only because of that status but also because of its unusual looks.

In our week and a half of test driving it, we got an equal number of "that's really cool looking" and "that's really ugly" comments, hurled presumably at the car, not at its driver. Most critiques of the driver tend toward the latter remark.

The Juke is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 180 horsepower and 170 pounds-feet of torque, which is quite a bit of a car of this size. The Juke, after all, is built on the platform of Nissan's Versa subcompact.
The Juke has a continuously variable transmission, but a six-speed manual is an option (on SV and SL trims that have front-wheel drive). All-wheel drive is also available.

The Juke is equipped with an Integrated Control (I-CON) system, which lets the driver pick from three driving modes: Normal, Sport, and Eco. Nissan says the I-CON system changes the throttle response and steering based on which mode of driving is engaged.

People Will Travel on Thanksgiving, Shocking Survey Finds

Amazingly, it appears that people are planning to travel for the coming Thanksgiving holiday.
Some 42.5 million Americans are estimated to be hitting the road on or around Thanksgiving, according to the American Automobile Association.
AAA says last year, 40.9 million people traveled during the holiday.
The numbers suggest that it is evidently common for people to travel during holidays.

OK, sorry for the sarcasm, but don't you get sick of reading "news" stories such as this at each holiday?

Perhaps a bit more pertinent (but not much) is how much people are paying for gasoline this holiday compared with a year ago.

AAA says that in the U.S. now, gas is averaging $3.39 a gallon, compared with $2.88 last Thanksgiving.

Nissan Quest Makes Hauling the Family a Stylish Event

The Nissan Quest got a clever redesign last year and is back for 2012 as a well-thought out, spacious family vehicle.

The makeover it received last year gave it an SUV-like appearance, with its tall structure and boxy, as opposed to rounded, edges.

The Quest has always been a bit different when it comes to styling in the minivan category (some would argue there is no style in the minivan category). But Nissan deserves props for that, because buyers in this segment don't necessarily want to look like they are driving the same thing as all of their neighbors.

And for those who would argue that minivans lack style, check out the subtle touches on the Quest, such as the chrome door handles and interior design, which say upscale SUV more than they say soccer-mom mobile.

Nissan offers the power-sliding side doors and power liftgate that give minivans the practicality that their users demand.

On the inside, you'll see the seating configuration offers two middle-row captain's chairs, as opposed to a bench. Those seats don't remove, as is the case in some competitors, but they fold down to add to cargo room.

Toyota Recalling More Than Half a Million Vehicles for Steering Woes

Toyota said today it will recall about 550,000 vehicles worldwide — mostly in the United States — for problems that could make it harder to steer.

The Associated Press reports that the recall affects 447,000 vehicles in North America, as well as 38,000 in Japan and another 25,000 in Australia and New Zealand, citingToyota spokesman Dion Corbett. In Europe some 14,000 vehicles are being recalled along with 10,000 in the Middle East and 14,000 in Asia outside Japan.

Toyota took 79 reports about the defect dating back to 2007, said Corbett. There have been no reports of accidents or injuries stemming from the problems, he said.

In the U.S., the recall affects the 2004 and 2005 Camry, Highlander, Sienna and Solara, the 2004 Avalon and the 2006 Highlander HV and 137,000 Lexus vehicles including the 2004 and 2005 ES330 and RX330 and 2006 RX400h.

Toyota will mail owners a notification to make an appointment with an authorized dealer to have their car inspected once replacement parts have been produced in sufficient quantities.

Toyota has recalled some 14 million vehicles since 2009 for problems such as acceleration and braking flaws. It has received a great deal of criticism for allegedly not being forthcoming enough about its problems.

The company has said that it has been trying to communicate better with customers and empower regional operations outside Japan to make safety decisions.

On Tuesday, Toyota said its earnings fell by 19 percent, to $1 billion, in the third quarter, as it continues to deal with difficulties from Japan's earthquake and tsunami.

Camaro Convertible Makes Performance Fun

Chevrolet rolled out a convertible version of its Camaro muscle car for the 2011 model year, and thank goodness it did. This car is great looking and fun to drive.

The convertible comes with a V-6 or V-8 engine and a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, just like the coupe.

Chevy added structural reinforcements such as a tower brace under the hood, a reinforcement brace for the transmission and underbody bracing to bolster the convertible's rigidity, producing a more sports car-like ride.

The Camaro convertible's power soft-top takes about 20 seconds to lower, and it's quite easily done. There is a latch above the windshield that you release, then touch and hold a button, and voila -- roof is gone.
The canvas top features sound-dampening material and a glass rear window with a defogger, and has the silhouette of the coupe's metal roof when raised.
The car looks great with top up or down.

Camaro LS and LT models take the V-6 engine, while a V-8 is featured on SS models. With the automatic transmission, the V-8 has an Active Fuel Management system, which shuts down four cylinders under light loads.

The Camaro takes three suspension settings, with the LS and LT models getting a sport-tuned suspension, the SS convertible having the FE3 setup and the SS coupe holding the new FE4 performance suspension. SS models also hold large Brembo-brand brakes and adjustable electronic stability and traction control settings and manual-transmission versions have Launch Control.

Engine features are:

323-hp, 3.6-liter direct-injected V-6 with 278 pounds-feet of torque
400-hp, 6.2-liter V-8 with 410 pounds-feet of torque (automatic SS)
426-hp, 6.2-liter V-8 with 420 pounds-feet of torque (manual SS)

Optional six-speed automatic

Camaros range from around $24,000 to about $42,000.

For good looks, fun driving and a retro, muscle car style, it's hard to beat the Camaro.

Buick Unveils Verano Compact Sedan

Buick says its new 2012 Verano is the brand's first compact that will bring premium features and luxury characteristics, and after a day spent driving this model, it's hard to argue against that.

The Verano is likely to continue the recent sedan successes that Buick has enjoyed with LaCrosse and Regal. It's got good looks, is exceptionally quiet and performs nicely enough to add a little driving excitement but not so much that it's over the top.

The Beat recently got to check out the Verano in New York City, and took it up the coast into Connecticut on a pleasant autumn day.

On the inside, the Verano's dashboard is logically and neatly arranged. There's a color touchscreen, and an optional SD card-based satellite-navigation system with upgraded audio.

The sound quality of the standard audio system is pretty good, and enhanced by the overall quietness of the car. The standard connectivity and infotainment features offer the best in technology, with Bluetooth for phone and audio being standard, as well as an aux jack plus iPod via USB, SiriusXM (free for 3 months) and the latest of OnStar (free for 6 months). Buick IntelliLink gives specific smartphone integration on the steering wheel and voice control of streaming audio from the phone through services such as Pandora and Stitcher.

The Verano defies easy classification, even though it is billed by Buick as a compact. It has 109 cubic feet of combined trunk and passenger space, pushing the limits of the EPA's "Compact" classification.

So in many ways, the Verano feels more like a midsize sedan. That's very true up front where there's plenty of knee room thanks to the design of the center stack and dashboard. The headroom is good too.

But move to the back seat and you feel much more like you are in a compact, with little leg room.

Trunk space is large, ranging between 14 and 15.2 cubic feet depending on whether or not you get the premium audio upgrade and/or tire inflator kit. The trunk has an open format without awkward niches or humps, and it has a relatively low (29-inch) lift-over height.

There are tons of sound-reducing measures like triple-sealed doors, laminated windshield and front side glass, a five-layer acoustic headliner, fabric-wrapped A-pillars, computer/robot applied goo throughout the body cavity and more.

On the road, the Verano is well-tuned and nice to drive.

The Verano offers a smooth, compliant ride. Not a bit of harshness here.

The Verano's naturally aspirated, direct-injected 2.4-liter 180-horsepower four-cylinder gives straight-ahead power. The engine matches the needs of the car wonderfully.

But EPA fuel economy estimates of 22 mpg city, 31 highway are a bit disappointing.

Conveniences such as push-button parking brake, dual-zone climate control and keyless ignition are standard.

The Verano carries a base price of around $23,470.

With so much demand for greater fuel efficiency, Hyundai continues to deliver its 40 mpg standard with the Veloster.
The new sport-model is engineered and geared toward a younger audience with its focus on a centralization of portable electronics. Yet, the Veloster, as Hyundai puts it, “doesn’t judge”.
With its practical reinvention of the coupe and as a car built for “whatever,” this concentration on design with functionality expands the reach of Hyundai customers that have grown the brand.

The Veloster introduces an all new 1.6-liter GDI Gamma engine paired with two transmissions, Hyundai’s proprietary six-speed manual and Hyundai’s first EcoShift dual-clutch.
Upon the new arrival’s release, the Beat had a drive and a peek at each Veloster in the warm, seaside air of the sunshine state’s St. Petersburg.
Some of the features setting the Veloster apart from the mainstream are its third passenger side door, to avoid awkward rear-seat access, and a multi-function 7-inch touch screen that welcomes you with sound and a customizable image before starting your drive.
Functions provided on the LG display are Pandora internet radio for iPhone users, Gracenote advanced voice recognition and album cover art via iPod, photo slideshow, video playback, as well as two fuel economy games, “ECO Coach and Blue Max,” used to track the driver’s fuel efficiency when driving. Designed for modification, personalizations of themes are available for background colors, images and sound. The 7-inch LG display is simple to use and makes for a less distracting drive with this ability to centralize typically portable applications within the center console.
Its hidden passenger door (the handle is tucked into the window frame) and 7-inch screen of multimedia features makes Hyundai the first in innovating an “Advanced technology three-door coupe”.
The sport-bike inspired design, described as a “fluidic sculpture,” has a motorcycle visor feel from the front and includes features like wraparound headlights and taillights to give the illusion that the car is in constant motion. Inside, the standard cloth seating is comfortable and supportive, coming in full black or full gray. Adding the Style/Tech packages, seating comes in black, gray, or red/black leatherette bolster with cloth inserts.
Competing with the Honda CR-Z and the Scion tC, the Veloster has the best-in-class interior volume in the compact sporty car segment. Both models are very spacious for an all adult seating despite outward compact appearance, the passenger volume measuring to 89.8 cubic feet and the cargo 15.5 cubic feet. The Veloster also carries tons of storage space with front door pockets with bottle holders, front and rear cupholders with storage consoles, and a dual-tiered armrest storage box.
The Veloster provides three different packages: Base, Style, and Technology. Basic standard features consist of XM radio with USB auxiliary jacks, a hands free Bluetooth phone system with voice recognition, Blue Link telematics system, a seven inch LCD touch screen, and 17 inch alloy wheels.

While the base package is appealing in itself, it’s hard not to make an upgrade for the Style and Tech packages, especially when the Tech package requires the purchasing of the Style package.
The Style package, which completely enhances the car’s already impressive interior and exterior at an added $2,000, includes 18-inch alloy wheels, chrome grille, front fog lights, sunroof, a premium audio package, and leather steering wheel and seating. The Tech package, also after an added $2,000, offers 18-inch alloys with painted inserts, backup warning sensors, navigation system with rearview camera, push button start, and 115V outlet.
Currently, the base Veloster M/T starts at $17,300, but moves up to $21, 300 after adding the style and tech packages. While the base DCT starts at $18, 550 the additional style and tech packages move the MSRP up to $22, 550.
While the Veloster is aesthetically daring, its dual-clutch transmission (DCT) may appear to potential drivers as confused or cautious in its driving delivery, responding with slight hesitation at first foot-to-gas. And for those craving more horsepower the Veloster leaves buyers questioning when the model will offer an engine upgrade.
Nevertheless, the new direct-injected four-cylinder engine, producing 138 horsepower, paired with the DCT drives with confidence in its road gripping standard 17-inch alloys with EBD and Brake Assist. Hyundai’s first DCT also offers manual shifting as well as paddle shifters on the steering wheel.
Driving the six-speed manual is surprisingly smooth thanks to the model’s light clutch. Steering is more personalized with not just an adjustable steering for height but for width as well, with the option of moving the steering wheel forward or back from the driver’s seat.
The 2012 Hyundai Veloster offers a fun, unique ride and designs with its asymmetric three door entries, advanced multimedia technology and a fuel economy that’s nothing to sneeze at, creating an aggressive
new image for the coupe.

Kia Unveils New Rio, Refreshed Soul

Kia, the other Korean automaker that has been on a hot streak lately, is unveiling a new version of its Rio subcompact for the 2012 model year. A five-door hatchback will be rolled out first, then a sedan later this year.

Kia gave journalists a peek at the new hatchback, along with a refreshed version of its Soul wagon, in Texas last week.

Based on early impressions of both vehicles, Kia will continue its success, in the same way that sister brand Hyundai has been kicking tail and taking names.

The Rio5 hatchback will start at just $14,350 for the base LX with six-speed manual transmission model, or $15,300 if you get six-speed automatic. Those prices are lower than the 2011 models.

If you move up to the EX model, pricing starts at $16,500, and the SX top level begins at $17,700.

Pricing for the sedan has not been announced yet, but expect it to be even less expensive.

“The all-new Rio brings Kia's successful combination of world-class styling, outstanding fuel economy, advanced technologies and tremendous value to the smallest and most economical vehicle in the Kia lineup,” Michael Sprague, vice president of marketing at Kia Motors America, told reporters.

2012 Hyundai Elantra is at the Head of the Class

The 2012 Hyundai Elantra remains one of the best compact cars on the market, thanks to its great styling, superb fuel economy and very reasonable sticker price.

The Elantra, which got a redesign in 2011, now has a new Active Eco System that smoothes the throttle response and boosts fuel economy by as much as 7 percent.

The steering has also been enhanced.

The common design language used by today by Hyundai, which the Korean company calls "fluidic sculpture," is found on the Sonata and Accent, as well as the Elantra.

It's a beautiful body styling that makes each model look luxurious and far more expensive than the car actually is.

The only question Hyundai will have to deal with in using this styling is what it will do for an encore and when will it have to do it. There is likely to become a point at which this bold styling will look dated, but that might be a few years off yet.

On the interior of the Elantra (and its other models), Hyundai gets more praise for the quality of materials and the spaciousness and comfort. In fact, Elantra has enough size to be classified as a midsize sedan by the EPA.

The highly fuel-efficient engine is a 1.8-liter, four cylinder that makes 148 horsepower and is linked to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
The Elantra gets 29 mpg in the city and 40 highway, and as Hyundai is fond of pointing out, that 40 mpg figure comes with no asterisks, meaning you don't need a particular engine or trim level.

Speaking of trim levels, there are two - GLS and Limited, and each has plenty of goodies.

Hyundai says it offers as standard equipment power windows and locks, USB/iPod input jack, satellite radio, remote keyless entry, and premium cloth seating. For options, you may choose a high-res navigation system and Bluetooth connectivity. And for comfort, you can get rear heated seats, front heated seats and leather upholstery.

There are plenty of safety features such as all-disc antilock brakes, six airbags, an electronic stability system and a tire pressure monitoring system. Elantra was made a top safety pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Elantras range in price from a little more than $16,000 to almost $23,000.

This is one of the best cars on the market, worth every penny that you'll spend on it.

Transportation Roundtable Lacks State Backing

It all boils down to this.

All the hand-wringing that’s going on this week with the Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable can be traced back to one player — the State of Georgia.

The Roundtable has until Oct. 15 to submit its final list of projects that will be included on a penny sales tax referendum that will be presented to voters next year. The tax is estimated to generate $7.2 billion over 10 years with 15 percent of that will go directly to local governments, leaving $6.1 billion to be divvied up by the Roundtable.

The leaders in the 10-county region are agonizing over whether it should add $80 million (in addition to the current $100 million) to fully fund the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority’s Xpress buses over the next 10 years by taking away from four other transit investments.

The Roundtable will meet on Oct. 11 to try to find consensus on the four toughest amendments that must be addressed before the Oct. 15 deadline.

Gas Prices Far Lower Than They Were a Month Ago

Average retail gasoline prices in Atlanta have fallen 3.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.22/g Sunday, according to CBS Atlanta.

The national average fell 2.1 cents per gallon last week to $3.42/g, according to gasoline price website AtlantaGasPrices.com.

Gas prices are 32.6 cents per gallon lower than a month ago.

But even though prices are dropping, prices Sunday were 56.9 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago.

The national average has decreased 24.0 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 61.8 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

"After oil prices briefly dropped to $75/bbl in the last two weeks, we've seen a mini-rally take place, driving prices up to a more recent mark of $82/bbl. The volatility we continue to see in oil prices isn't surprising, and will likely continue as a fragile economy and some upbeat investors play the market," said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst. "What this means for motorists is a continued roller coaster ride at the gas pump. While I don't expect a huge of movement in either direction, these up and down fluctuations in gas prices will become the norm ahead of a volatile spring 2012 time period," DeHaan adds.

Soap Box Derby Coming to Southside

In an effort to establish a south side hub for the Dunwoody Kiwanis Club’s Soap Box Derby, Allan Vigil Ford Lincoln, in Morrow Georgia, has partnered with the Dunwoody Kiwanis Club to create Soap Box on the South Side.

On Saturday October 22 and Sunday October 23, Allan Vigil Ford Lincoln will host The Soap Box on the South Side Rally Race for local children to earn points to qualify for an Akron race. The race will be held at the Morrow dealership and entry fee will be $25 per person with all proceeds going to CURE Childhood Cancer, an Atlanta based non-profit which raises money for childhood cancer research. In addition to the Stock, Super Stock, and Master’s division races, the event will also include activities for Super Kids, involving some special children from CURE Childhood Cancer. Participants will be invited to wear costumes in honor of Halloween weekend. Food and drink, as well as other fun activities for the kids will be available throughout the weekend, including a cook out to follow the Saturday race activities.

Whether you’re an experienced soap box racer or are brand new to the sport, all kids (ages 8-17) are welcome to participate. Here are a few simple steps if you would like to get involved:

GM Foundation Donates to Atlanta University Center

The General Motors Foundation recently announced a $75,000 donation to the Atlanta University Center Consortium in support of AUC Dual Degree Engineering Program students, the Spelman College SpelBots Robotics team, and faculty and curriculum development.
“This funding will strengthen the tutorial program, provide scholarships and assist the development of curriculum on the campuses of Clark Atlanta, Morehouse, and Spelman,” said Tracey Martin-Toomer, director of the AUC Dual Degree Engineering Program. Dr. Andrew Williams, Spelman College’s SpelBots coach, said the donation represents a nice addition to the SpelBots program, supporting its mission to promote computer and robotics education and research by competing in the International RoboCup 4-Legged competitions.
The GM Foundation has provided more than $26 million since 2005 to support education initiatives in engineering, manufacturing, design and business across the country.

Chevy Unveiling its New Sonic Subcompact

Amid huge recent growth in the subcompact car market, Chevrolet is introducing the Sonic. This new entrant's development was led by General Motors’ engineering center in South Korea. Yet the car has characteristics designated for the North American market, such as its engines, 10 air bags, brisker steering and unique chassis tuning.

The Beat got a look and some driving time with the Sonic in beautiful San Francisco recently.

Chevy says the Sonic's design was inspired by motorcycles. Sonic design manager Kathy Sirvio even said that she rides a Moto Guzzi bike. You can see some of the design inspiration on the inside and out.

Sonic is priced range from $14,495 to $19,200, which makes it competitive with many other subcompacts and is around $3000 below Chevy's popular Cruze small sedan. The Sonic, available as a sedan or hatchback, is priced about $700–$800 higher as a hatch. Three trim levels are available.

The hatch is more than a foot shorter than the sedan, but it swallows more cargo, and that's with the rear seat up. Chevy says there are 19 cubic feet in the cargo area, plus underfloor storage. With the rear seats down, there are 30.7 cubic feet. The sedan offers 14 cubic feet.

Both models have adequate room for four adults. Seat comfort is good. The LS and LT models are upholstered in cloth, while the LTZ has perforated faux-leather (real leather is not offered). There are three interior color patterns, each with two tones.

The hard plastic interior surfaces are neat, but it would have been nice for Chevy to have softened things up a bit by adding some padding. That would have added to a general perception of a comfortable interior.

On the dash, there's an analog tachometer adjacent to a digital speedometer, which is one of the motorcycle touches Chevy alluded to.

Sonic has two four-cylinder engines, both taken from the Cruze: a 1.8-liter is the standard and a 1.4-liter turbo is optional. Both make 138 horsepower, but with the turbo you get added torque -- 148 pounds-feet, compared with 125. The turbo currently has only a six-speed manual transmission, with the base engine having five-speed. But Chevy says an automatic tranny is coming to the turbo in the spring.

The turbo is a $700 option.

The base 1.8-liter gets an EPA rating of city ratings of 25 mpg with the automatic and 26 with the manual. For a car this small, that's fairly modest.

That engine gets 35 mpg on the highway, which is OK.

But if you bump up to the turbo, numbers rise to a much better 29 city and 40 highway.

Another point about the turbo is that it gets 60 mph in 8.2 seconds, compared with 8.6 seconds for the 1.8-liter manual and 9.4 seconds for the automatic, according to Chevy.

To its credit, Chevy has done a great job of minimizing engine and wind noise. It uses some of the same dampening technology that its sister Buick brand uses.

The manual shifting is fairly effortless, and the clutch work is also pretty light. Plus, Chevy has included a standard hill-holder feature, in both the manual and six-speed automatic. The automatic has a manual shift mode which is activated with a switch on the side of the shift knob.

Chassis stiffness is admirable, contributing to a fairly spirited ride quality on twisty roads.

With the Sonic, Chevy is aiming to maintain its new momentum in cars, as it seeks to become less reliant on trucks and SUVs. This car might help it move in that direction.

DVD Demonstrates Dangers of Distracted Driving

Honda Recalling Nearly a Million Vehicles Worldwide

Honda recently recalled 962,000 cars worldwide to fix power windows and computer systems.
The move covers 936,000 Fit subcompacts, CR-V crossovers and Fit Arias in North America, Asia, Europe and Africa. The Fit is called Jazz in some global markets, and the Fit Aria is also known as City.
Honda says the recall was prompted by defects in driver's-side power window switch units, which could melt and catch fire.
Some 26,000 CR-Z compact hybrids will also be recalled globally because of programming problems with the engine control unit.
Honda says no injuries have resulted from the defects.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal, Meriwether County officials and South Korea's Mando Corp. announced today the company plans to open a high-tech manufacturing operation in the Meriwether County Industrial Park.

The company plans to invest $200 million and create 426 jobs through opening this new facility. Mando’s Georgia plant will supply electric power steering gears and anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control equipment to vehicle manufacturers including Chrysler, General Motors, Hyundai and Kia, among others. This site will be Mando’s third location in the United States.

VW Recalling 30,000 Jettas

Volkswagen recently announced the recall of more than 30,000 Jetta sedans from the 2011 and 2012 model years because the tailpipes can stick out too far and burn people.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website says that stainless steel exhaust pipe tips installed where the cars were imported can stick out farther than the factory-installed tailpipes.
When the tips are hot, people could be burned on the legs.
Volkswagen reportedly received complaints of burns in July and began investigating.
VW dealers will check the cars to see if the exhaust tips are too long and replace them free of charge if necessary.

Officials are considering a proposed 25 percent increase in bus fares on Gwinnett County's public transit system, according to news reports.
The Gwinnett Transit Advisory Board is scheduled to hear input from the public on the proposed fare hike during a 7 p.m. Monday meeting at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center.
The Gwinnett Daily Post reports (http://bit.ly/oeXj3Q) that fares would vary from $3.75 to $5 based on location for certain express routes if the proposal is approved.
Officials said local service would be $2.50 per ride for many passengers under the plan.

The app is said to disable the phone after the car goes over 10 miles per hour. It monitors progress by tracking the phone from cell towers.

But if the app is turned off after it's been activated, a message will be sent to the person who installed it.

Atlantic Station Gets Metro Area's First Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Atlanta's first public electric vehicle charging station opens today at Atlantic Station.

The station will be at 271 17th Street across from the Millennium Gate.

The charging station will have multiple outlets and be powered by overhead solar panels. Motorists with electric powered, zero-emissions vehicles can use it 24 hours a day.

The station is the first in the metro area and is Atlantic Station's latest green innovation.

The mixed-use community was one of the largest brown-field renovation projects in the nation when it opened in 2005.

The charging station will be able to fully charge all of the electric vehicles on the market in the U.S. currently within a three to seven hour window, compared with as much as 25 hours for standard outlets.

The 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI is a high-performance car that offers a potent engine and a nicely tuned suspension. But really, if you're more than 24 years old, you might look a little odd driving this car.

That's because this is pretty much a toy for the "too-fast, too-furious" set. You know the kind: amped up on energy drinks, saying "dude" a lot, very The Situation-esque.

What's odd about this is that otherwise, Subaru is a serious car company, that makes excellent products known for reliability and their all-wheel drive.

But I guess even car companies should have a sense of humor, and this is Subaru's turn at being a bit cheeky.

The Impreza WRX STI get its name from the WRX and the STI models, which can be had as five-door hatchbacks or sedans. Some would say that this car competes with the the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, and that's fair enough. But you'll also find it compared with the Mazdaspeed3. I have a bit of a problem with that one, because that car seems a little more mature. You can have fun in the Mazdaspeed3, but it also has excellent road manners and doesn't come outfitted in ridiculously gaudy race car regalia.

The WRX STI now has wider fenders, squared-off bumpers, and a black grille. Those things are OK. But when you add the ridiculous spoiler, you really are saying that this car is fine for the track, but driving it in normal circumstances is like wearing cleats to go shopping in Macy's.

Subaru has firmed up the suspension on the WRX STI and added 18-inch wheels.

There are also higher spring rates and thicker stabilizer bars for enhanced handling. The Brembo brakes feature four-piston front and two-piston rear calipers and give the car superb stopping ability.

The engine is a 305-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder linked to a six-speed manual transmission. It makes 290 pounds-feet of torque. The engine has sequential multiport fuel injection and incline start assist and a high-cross-flow-design intercooler and Subaru’s Intelligent Drive system to bolster traction.

On the interior, check out the tilting, telescoping leather steering wheel with audio controls, automatic climate control and keyless entry. Coming standard are Bluetooth audio streaming, hands-free calling, USB ports and a single-CD stereo. Options offered include heated seats, side mirrors, moonroof, satellite radio, leather upholstery, xenon headlights, a navigation system and projector-beam fog lights.

The test drive model had a sticker price of $39,870.

The WRX STI offers lots of performance capability, and its own kind of styling. But there are other models out there that offer great performance and that you can actually grow older with. And you might even get away with paying a bit less.

Lexus Might Lose Top Spot

Lexus is overhauling its vehicle lineup as it faces the prospect of losing its spot atop the sales chart in the U.S. luxury market, Bloomberg News reports.
The company will roll out its 2013 Lexus GS 350 in February, Bloomberg said, and it will be redesigned with a larger interior and better handling and acceleration. The car has a 306-horsepower, V-6 engine, with optional "F Sport" high-performance and hybrid versions also due next year, Lexus said.
The new GS has sportier performance than past versions and is leading the brand into a whole new territory, the company said.
Toyota has had difficulty restocking U.S. Lexus dealers with inventory after Japan's earthquake and tsunami in March. That led to a 19 percent decline in sales for Lexus through July. Those sales trailed those of BMW and Mercedes. Lexus has led luxury sales in the U.S. since 2000.

Ram Dakota Pickup Truck Going Away

Chrysler is ending production of its Ram Dakota pickup Tuesday, resulting in cost 39 job cuts and possibly more at Dodge's Warren Truck Plant in Michigan, according to the Detroit News.
The newspaper reported that the union representing those workers believes the number of job cuts could be 150 or more.
In May, Chrysler Group CEO Sergio Marchionne said the company plans to replace the body-on-frame Dakota with a car-based "lifestyle" vehicle for the Ram brand, the Detroit News said.
The newspaper said a decision had not yet been made about where to build it.

Chevy Cruze Continues as Hot Seller

Chevrolet continues to see solid demand for its Cruze small sedan, thanks to its good fuel economy and modest price. General Motors said total sales of its passenger cars increased 8 percent in July compared with a year ago and that retail sales for cars rose 9 percent for the month, led by the Cruze. The Cruze Eco, which gets an estimated 42 mpg highway, accounted for 19 percent of the model’s retail sales during the month. The Cruze sold more than 24,000 units in July, and has sold near 148,000 for the year. That figure beats the hot-selling Hyundai Elantra and Honda Civic, according to news reports. The Cruze has a chance to take over as the top-selling compact if it is able to beat the Toyota Corolla by more than 7,000 vehicles.

Pump Prices Staying Relatively Low

The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline has dropped to $3.54 in Georgia, 11 cents below the $3.65 mark of last week. The national average is $3.59, which is 7 cents lower than last week. So that's good news, but just for a bit of perspective, we were paying $2.62 a gallon just a year ago.

The metro Atlanta average price is $3.57, while the highest prices in state are found in Athens at $3.61, and the lowest being in Augusta, at $3.41.

Gas prices are expected to stay low through the coming Labor Day holiday, which is good news for road trippers.

"Economic growth is not only slow in the U.S., but in Europe as well and is expected to keep oil prices below $90 a barrel throughout the remainder of the month," said Jessica Brady, spokesperson, AAA Auto Club South in a news release. "Some retailers are slow to drop prices at the pump since the market is so volatile at this time. However, consumers should start to see retail gas prices fall even further this week as a result of crude oil continuing to trade below $90 a barrel."

AAA to Offer Help to Drivers of Electric Vehicles

AAA has announced that it will provide mobile charging roadside-assistance trucks to help drivers of electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf.
AAA said the truck will have the ability to provide Level 2 and 3 charging to the automotive club's members who lose the charge on their batteries. Some 10-15 minutes of charge time should allow motorists to drive up to 15 miles to a charging station, where they can fully charge, the group said.
The program is beginning in Portland, Ore., Seattle, the San Francisco area, Los Angeles, Knoxville, Tenn. and the Tampa area.
The trucks will also be able to provide traditional services such as jump starts, tire changes and lockout service.

There has been some pretty dismal economic news over the past few days, but one slightly upbeat development is seen in gas prices, which have slid a bit.
The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.65, according to AAA, which is 6 cents lower than a week ago.
Nationally, the average price is $3.66.
AAA's website said the lowest priced gasoline in the state is in Augusta, at $3.50, while Athens had the highest, at $3.70.
If you're planning to head north, make sure you stop in Greenville, S.C., where as of yesterday, gas could be had for as low as $3.37.
But the good old days of 2010 saw us paying about a dollar a gallon less than what we're paying now.

Another Record Sales Month for Audi

Someone apparently forgot to tell Audi that we're in an economic slump.
The German luxury automaker today reported record July U.S. sales of 9,146 vehicles, which beats the company's old mark of 7,974 from July 2001.
Last month was also Audi's seventh straight of record-setting sales in the U.S. market.
Audi also said its year-to-date sales rose nearly 16 percent, to 65,055 for calendar year 2011.

Optimistic Forecasts for Fuel Economy Standards

Last week, President Barack Obama announced the next phase of a program to boost the fuel efficiency of vehicles sold in the U.S., aiming to decrease dependence on foreign oil, reduce pollution and lower costs for motorists.
The new fuel economy standards state that by model year 2025, the average American car or truck will get 54.5 miles a gallon (the average car currently gets 23.8 mpg).

The administration says it worked with auto workers, union representatives, manufacturers and environmental leaders to craft the requirements.

Last week's announcement follows up on a plan that the administration implemented in 2009, that, according to the White House, is estimated to save 1.8 billion barrels of oil -- and save consumers up to $3,000 at the pump -- over the lifetimes of vehicles from model years 2012-2016.
The administration projects that the changes will spur production of more electric and hybrid vehicles from manufacturers and more clean-diesel, efficient SUVs and sedans. Automakers are expected to be more motivated to make smart, innovative cars and trucks -- from the materials they choose down to the design of their engines and transmissions. The administration also predicts that start-up companies in the clean-energy sector and in advanced battery manufacturing, will get more work, helping to create jobs.

The administration additionally forecasts:
    -- Saving of 12 billion barrels of oil and elimination of 6 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide pollution.
    -- Buyers of new cars in 2025 will save $8,200 in fuel costs, compared with what they'd pay for gas for a similar vehicle bought in 2010.
    -- American drivers will save nearly $2 trillion over the life of the program.

Hyundai Refreshes Flagship Genesis Sedan

Hyundai continues to stir the automotive world by releasing new and revamped models that offer value, quality and styling.
One of the company's newest projects is a refresh of its premium Genesis sedan. Genesis debuted in 2008 as a 2009 model, and captured attention for its luxury-like features accompanied by a reasonable price tag. And with the economic crunch that we've experienced since then, it seems that Hyundai had the right idea. Genesis sales rose 33 percent from 2010 to this year.
Hyundai unveiled the refreshed Genesis recently in beautiful Charleston, S.C., where automotive scribes got to see a car that has gained power, fuel economy and technology. And even with those improvements, it still carries a huge value compared with its luxury competitors.

Ford Focus is Better than Ever

With its newest version of the Focus compact, Ford takes a bold step forward, placing it in a leading position in this key segment.

The 2012 model year brings a redesign to the Focus, and the results are stunning.

Ford, after much speculation (and many requests), made this new version based on the European model. One look at the new Focus, and you'll see that this was a good move.

The Focus is available as both a sedan and hatchback, and has a sporty, aggressive design that belies its status as a modestly priced compact.

Another cool thing about this Focus, though, is the fact that it does more than just look the part when it comes to sportiness.

Ford also says its list of standard and available features includes remote start, navigation system, backup camera, moonroof. The automaker says a self-park system which be available later this year.

For 2012, the Focus also debuts new airbag technology from Ford that is designed to protect against chest and rib injuries. Antilock brakes, traction control, and an electronic stability all come standard.
The Focus has a price range of around $17,000 to close to $23,000.

With the new Focus, Ford has taken a very good compact car and made it significantly better.

Chevrolet Impala is Roomy, Affordable

Buyers of large sedans generally want a car that is roomy, provides a smooth ride and gets at least reasonable fuel economy. With the 2011 Chevrolet Impala, buyers' desires are met, and at an affordable price.

The Impala is powered by a standard 3.5-liter, 207-horsepower V-6 engine that has flex-fuel capability, meaning it can run on E85 (that is, if you can find a station that's selling it). You may also choose a 3.9-liter, 230-horsepower V-6, but both power plants are linked to a four-speed automatic transmission. The front wheel-drive Impala gets 17-18 mpg in the city and 27-29 highway, which is certainly respectable for this size car.

The Impala seats five quite comfortably, and if you have a large amount of cargo to haul, you can fold the rear seat down to extend the trunk. Chevy says that will produce 18.6 cubic feet of trunk space, which is quite impressive.

Besides its roominess, there's not much that's remarkable about the interior of the Impala, as the materials and fit and finish are OK, but nothing special. Perhaps that's how Chevy is able to price the Impala so reasonably.

There are three trim levels, beginning with the LS, which features cloth seats, a one-touch power window for the driver, plus cruise control, dual zone climate control with air filtration, simulated wood trim, OnStar satellite communications, CD player and XM Satellite Radio.

Step up one rung and you have the LT, with an optional power glass sunroof, power front passenger seat and heated front seats.

On the high end is the LTZ, which has leather seats, heated power seats up front, leather-wrapped steering wheel and an eight-speaker Bose audio system that are standard.

Front and side safety ratings are good, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, while rear safety is rated acceptable. The Impala has dual front, front-side and two-row head airbags, antilock brakes and traction and stability control systems.

Styling is pretty straightforward - you might not find anything in the Impala's design to go crazy over, but you also won't find anything that's a big turnoff.

Pricing is modest, with the Impala ranging from around $25,000 to just about $31,000.

Overall, the Impala presents a pretty good value for those seeking a traditional family car at a reasonable price.

Honda Accord: Perpetual Greatness

At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, the Honda Accord will probably always be one of the best cars on the market, for as long as it is made.

The 2011 version comes with a few improvements that keep it on top.

You can now get the Accord with your choice of three engines. There's a 177-horsepower, 2.4-liter four cylinder engine on LX and SE sedans. The LX-S coupe and EX sedan and coupe engine power goes to 190-horsepower. You can also have a 271-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 for more power and sharper driving dynamics. The V6 with a six-speed automatic transmission includes Honda’s Variable Cylinder Management system, which shuts down cylinders in the engine when they are not needed to conserve gasoline.

Speaking of fuel economy, the Accord has better aerodynamics, lower engine friction and adjusted transmission gearing ratios, which contribute to improved mileage. But you won't sacrifice any power or displacement from the prior year version. The Accord gets 17-23 mpg in the city and 26-34 mpg on the highway.

Honda has also redone the front and rear styling of the Accord.

In both the coupe and sedan, the Accord has a new grille and bumper in the front, with new wheel designs. Honda says the sedan comes standard on 16-inch steel wheels, but 17-inch alloys are available. The 17-inch alloys are standard on the coupe, which offers 18-inch alloys as an option.

The interior is impressive, with quality materials and a clean design that really looks like it's straight from a luxury brand. Standard features include air conditioning, cruise control, stereo with auxiliary input jack, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. The SE sedan trim level has leather seating, heated front seats, and a leather trimmed steering wheel. And if you get the optional navigation system, you'll also get a backup camera.

The Accord's safety features include side-impact and side curtain airbags, an electronic stability system, four wheel disc and antilock brakes, and active front head restraints.

Pricing ranges from around $21,500 to just over $30,000.

It's hard not to like the Accord, and we'll probably say that for as long as the car is around.

Acura TSX Sport Wagon is Nimble, Practical

The 2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon is true to its name, offering sporty driving dynamics in an attractively designed wagon package.

This model arrives two years after the redesign of the TSX, and seems to be right on time, as sporty cars that can double as family vehicles seem to be growing in both supply and demand.

The engine is a 201-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder which is linked to a five-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is pretty good, at 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg highway.

The wagon is a bigger vehicle than its TSX sedan sibling, with a longer and taller body. It comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights and mirror-integrated turn signals standard.

The TSX wagon comfortably seats five, and comes with such niceties as rear air conditioning vents, a very handy feature at this time of year to add to the comfort of those sitting in the back area. Acura has also added more insulation to dampen cabin noise. There is a nice list of standard features such as heated, power front seats, leather, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and USB/iPod integration. Acura has updated is optional navigation system with a new screen and extended map coverage. Additionally you can get weather and traffic updates.

Acura has included a number of safety features on the TSX such as antilock brakes, front, side-impact, and side curtain airbags, an electronic stability system, and active head restraints for the front seats. All are standard.

The TSX wagon sells from around $32,000.

It's probably safe to say that sales of the TSX wagon won't come near the levels of its sedan sibling, so you might not see a whole lot of these rolling around the streets of Atlanta or Macon.

But for those who choose this ride, they'll be getting style and functionality, and a bit of sportiness, in a very solid package.

Electric Car Growth to be Modest in U.S., Study Says

Gas Prices Dropping in Georgia

Gasoline prices in Georgia are continuing a recent downward trend, following a decline in oil prices.
The average price of a gallon of gas in the the state is $3.58, AAA Auto Club South reported on its website. That's down from $3.62 a week ago and from $3.94 a month ago.
Meanwhile, oil prices have slid, closing last week at $93.01 a barrel, after closing at $99.29 the previous week. Poor economic forecasts have contributed to oil's slide, experts said.

Auto Sales Slip in May

Auto purchasing declined in May, helping lead retail sales to a decline for the first time in almost a year. Sales fell 0.2 percent, but wholesale prices rose 0.2 percent in May, which was the slowest rate in 10 months. Food costs declined and gas prices gained the smallest amount in eight months.

The drop in retail sales followed 10 consecutive months of gains, the Commerce Department said Tuesday.

Auto sales were off by nearly 3 percent, the sharpest drop since February 2010. Experts said fewer price cuts and a shortage of popular fuel-efficient vehicles caused the drop. Japan's natural disasters hindered transfers of vehicles and parts to North America.

Without the drop in autos, retail sales were up 0.3 percent.

The retail sales decline shows that the economy is struggling, as consumers face high fuel prices and continued weakness in the job market.

Ford to Sell Hybrid Minivan

Ford says that it will produce a minivan that will be its first U.S. vehicle sold only as a hybrid.
Ford offers hybrid versions of some of its cars, but none are exclusively hybrids.
Ford's minivan will be similar to a five-passenger van, the C-Max, which it currently sells in Europe, That model is gasoline-powered.
Ford reportedly had planned previously to sell a seven-passenger, gas-powered C-Max in the U.S. next year, but now ill offer it as a gas/electric hybrid only.
The company says the vehicle will get more than 41 miles per gallon. There will also be a plug-in version that will be similar to the Chevrolet Volt, which runs initially solely on electricity, then switches over to gasoline mode.

California Green Car Incentive Going Gangbusters

The rebate program in California offered to buyers of electric cars is nearly out of funds, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
The Golden State gives up to $5,000 to green-car buyers, on a first-come, first-served basis. The Chronicle says so many have applied during the current fiscal year, however, that the program's $5 million annual funding will probably be used up before the next fiscal year begins in July.
The state will likely appropriate more funding next month, but car buyers will still probably have to be placed on a waiting list.

Kia Ramping Up for More Production in West Point

Kia Motors is launching a $100 million project to expand its West Point, Ga., factory to be able to produce an additional 60,000 vehicles a year as the company seeks to meet rising demand for its products, the Associated Press reports.

Kia has has hired 1,000 more workers and is set to add a third shift to make the Sorrento crossover vehicle, and starting in September, the Optima midsize sedan, Kia reportedly said in a statement.

Kia has seen strong sales of the redesigned Optima, and its Sorrento and Sportage crossovers have done well also.

106,000 Older Priuses Recalled

Toyota has announced a recall of 106,000 first-generation Prius hybrid cars globally on Wednesday, saying the cars have faulty steering caused by a nut that may come loose.

Toyota says one accident suspected of being related to the problem was reported in the United States.

Toyota, which has been beset by huge global recalls recently, said the latest affects 48,000 Prius vehicles in Japan, starting with the first ones that went on sale in 1997, and those manufactured through 2003.

It also affects 58,000 vehicles sold internationally, including 52,000 Prius cars sold from 2001 through 2003 in the United States and some 1,200 in Britain and 800 in Germany, Toyota said.

Toyota says loose nuts in the electric-power steering can cause the vehicle, if operated over a long time, to steer with too much force.

The problem can be fixed by putting in better nuts and will take about four hours, the company said.

GM Adding Production Jobs

General Motors has announced that it will create 2,500 jobs at a Detroit-area plant that produces electric cars, an investment that will total $69 million and enable production of two new Chevrolet sedans.

The plant makes the Chevy Volt and its European counterpart, the Opel Ampera.

But GM says it will give the plant the ability to make the new Malibu midsize car and a revamped Impala.

About 1,200 of the jobs will be new hires, as GM will recall about 1,300 laid-off workers in the U.S.

GM said this month that it would create or keep about 4,000 jobs by investing $2 billion in 17 factories in eight states.

Sportscar-like driving combines with SUV-like versatility in the 2011 Infiniti FX35.

The FX35 has a 303-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine linked to a seven-speed automatic transmission with auto-manual mode. Standard rear-wheel-drive or optional all-wheel-drive are available. The FX35 gets 16 mpg in the city and 21-23 mpg on the highway. Infiniti says the all-wheel-drive version tows up to 2,000 pounds.

The FX35's sweeping exterior styling is distinctive, with its elongated narrow hood, bi-xenon headlights and functional side air vents. The FX35 has 18-inch alloy wheels standard, with 20-inchers are optional. Infiniti says a key addition for 2011 is a power liftgate for added convenience.

There is also adaptive cruise control and a forward-warning system, which applies the brakes in the event of an impending collision, which are optional. Active head restraints, side-impact airbags for the front seats, side-curtain airbags for both rows, traction control, an electronic stability system, and four-wheel antilock disc brakes are each standard.

Priced from $43,000 to around $49,000, the FX is competitive with the sticker prices of other luxury SUVs.

With its sportiness and versatility, the FX 35 offers plenty of style and substance.

GM Sees Highest Earnings in More Than 10 Years

General Motors posted its largest quarterly profit in more than 10 years, thanks to fuel-efficient cars and smaller SUVs that have become more popular as gas prices have risen steadily.

GM said Thursday its earnings were $3.2 billion, or $1.77 per share, in the first quarter.

GM's Detroit rivals, Ford and Chrysler, also have posted strong earnings as the U.S. auto industry is recovering from its near-death experience of a few years ago.

GM got a lift from its new small car, the Chevrolet Cruze, and from crossover SUVs such as the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain, which offer better fuel economy than traditional large SUVs. Revenue was up 15 percent to $36.2 billion, thanks to a 25 percent gain in U.S. sales and a 10 percent hike in China, GM's biggest market. Experts say GM's sales are likely to carry it back to the top of the world auto industry, a position it lost to Toyota.

The funny thing about this is the U.S. automakers used to claim that there is no way they could be profitable making fuel-efficient vehicles. Never mind the fact that their Japanese rivals were kicking their rear ends by doing just that.

Now, it seems, the U.S. companies finally get it. If you want to have success in the auto industry, give customers reliable cars that are fuel-efficient and suit their lifestyle needs.

2011 Dodge Ram is Rugged and Comfortable

The 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck is tough yet refined, allowing you to handle all of your blue-collar duties in executive comfort.

This full-size truck offers three engines: a 215-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6, a 310-horsepower, 4.7-liter V-8, or an unmatched 390-horsepower 5.7-liter V-8 Hemi. Three transmissions are also offered: a four-speed automatic with a manual mode, a five-speed automatic with manual mode and a regular five-speed automatic.

Dodge says the Ram can haul up to 1,900 pounds of payload and tows a hearty 10,450 pounds.

The Ram is available with four-wheel drive, and Dodge says it uses a standard coil-spring rear suspension to make for a smoother ride.

The Ram's fuel economy is rated at 13-14 mpg in the city and 18-20 on the highway.

There are a number of nice standard features on the Ram, including cruise control, Sirius Satellite Radio and a CD player, for those who still use them. And the SLT trim level offers options such as a sunroof, heated and adjustable front seats, backup camera and navigation.
The top-line Laramie trim level offers dual-zone climate control and an optional satellite TV with DVD entertainment system.

But possibly the best feature is the optional RamBox, which is an integrated, lockable storage box on either side of the bed and around the wheels. You can store things inside or use them as coolers by putting some ice in there along with your favorite beverages and food. Dodge said it designed the boxes to fill the space around the wheel wells, giving the bed a rectangular appearance.

Also offered is a new factory spray-in bedliner, available on all models.

The Ram's technology offerings feature the Uconnect multimedia system, which gives real-time traffic and navigation, phone connectivity and multiple ways to connect and store music files. New for this model year is the optional Garmin navigation system.

For your comfort and convenience, you may select among three bed lengths (five-foot-seven, six-foot-four, and eight feet) and three cab sizes (two door, Quad Cab and crew cab).

A pair of new trim levels add to the packages previously offered. The Ram Outdoorsman (which the test drive model was) and Laramie Longhorn let you experience nature from a little more of an up-close perspective. The Outdoorsman replaces the TRX model and is good for hunters, fishermen and campers. There is an optional fishing rod and rifle rack, trailer-towing upgrades, a giant fuel tank, an enhanced lighting package, all-terrain tires, underbody protection, and super comfortable seats. Dodge says the Laramie Longhorn is its most luxurious Ram to date. On the inside, there is a classic western look with stitched leather saddle-bag upholstery, walnut trim and all-weather rubber mats with removable Berber inserts.

With its many offerings and trim levels, the Ram ranges in price from around $21,000 to $46,000.

The Ram is rugged and versatile, while also being luxurious, making it a comfortable and capable work truck.

High Gas Prices Got You Down? Heed These Tips for Saving Fuel

Go for the shade. The hot summer sun that makes the inside of your car feel like a sauna also zaps fuel from your gas tank.
Use your garage for your car. Got a garage? Clear it out and make room for your car. Parking in your garage will help your car stay warm in winter and cool in summer, and you won't have to depend as much on your gas-guzzling air-conditioning or defroster when you drive.
Pump up your tires. Don't get caught driving on underinflated tires. Underinflated tires wear down more quickly and they also lower your car's gas mileage.

"Tires that have low pressure offer more resistance so the engine is going to work harder to keep the car at 60," says Brian Moody, road test editor at Edmunds.com.

Your car's gas mileage may plummet by as much as 15 percent. Driving on underinflated tires may also reduce the life of your tires by 15 percent or more.

Check your tire pressure once a month. Buy a digital gauge and keep it in your glove box. Compare the pressure in your tires with the recommended pressure listed in your owner's manual and on the placard in your car door. Then inflate your tires as needed. Be sure to check tire pressure when your tires are cold. A good time is early in the morning after your car's been idle overnight.
Keep your engine in tune. Fixing a car that is out of tune or has failed an emissions test can boost gas mileage by about 4 percent. So be sure to give your car regular tune-ups. You'll also want to watch out for worn spark plugs. A misfiring spark plug can reduce a car's fuel efficiency by as much as 30 percent.
Replace air filters. Keep a close eye on your engine's air filter. When the engine air filter clogs with dirt, dust and bugs, it causes your engine to work harder and your car becomes less fuel-efficient. Replacing a clogged air filter could improve your gas mileage by as much as 10 percent and save you 15 cents a gallon. It's a good idea to have your engine air filter checked at each oil change. The Car Care Council recommends changing your car's air and oil filters every three months or 3,000 miles or as specified in your owner's manual.
Use the right oil. You can improve your car's gas mileage by 1 percent to 2 percent by using the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil. Opt for motor oil with the words "energy conserving" on the API performance label. This oil contains friction-reducing additives.
Don't skimp on maintenance. Be serious about auto care. Your car's performance depends on it.

Smooth Stylishness in an SUV: Toyota 4Runner

Versatility, one of the key characteristics that made SUVs so popular, is found in abundance in the 2011 Toyota 4Runner. This SUV has long been one of the best on the market, and its latest version is no departure.
It is comfortable, durable, powerful and nice looking.

The 4Runner was redesigned in 2010, and we can honestly say that with this vehicle, each new design seems to be a little more appealing than the last. That's certainly not the case with all vehicles.

The 4Runner's style is bolstered by its 17- or 20-inch cast-aluminum wheels, skid plates, heated outside mirrors with turn indicators, fog lights, black fender flares and sunroof.

Toyota has dropped its experiment of equipping some 4Runners with four-cylinder engines. Now the only power plant is a 270-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 with 278 pounds-feet of torque. The engine is linked to a five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) and sequential shift mode.

The 4Runner shares its platform with Toyota's FJ Cruiser off-road vehicle. Its trim levels remain Limited, SR5 and Trail. You can select rear-wheel or four-wheel drive with the Limited and SR5, and the Trail has part-time dual-range 4WD. The Trail also has the Crawl Control feature that helps maintain control when ascending or descending hills. On the Limited, there is an X-REAS adaptive suspension damper feature designed to smooth out the ride.

Toyota says the 4Runner can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Fuel economy is adequate for an SUV this size, at 17 mpg in the city and 22-23 mpg on the highway.

Interior creature comforts are numerous and include XM Radio, Bluetooth connectivity, USB port, JBL six-disc CD changer with 15 speakers and subwoofer, voice-activated touch-screen DVD navigation system with integrated backup camera, water-resistant fabric- or leather-trimmed and heated eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a refreshed tachometer featuring an ECO driving indicator and average fuel consumption gauge.

The 4Runner offers an optional third-row seat, allowing you to haul seven passengers. For more cargo space, take advantage of the fold-flat second-row rear seats and an available pullout cargo deck that can support up to 440 pounds.

Toyota says its Star Safety System, found on the 4Runner, consists of vehicle stability control with traction control and an antilock brake system with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. There is also hill start assist control and front, side-mounted and knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, and side curtain airbags for the second and third row.

The 4Runner ranges in price from around $30,000 to about $40,000.

The 4Runner remains an outstanding SUV, thanks to its size, styling, smooth ride and versatility.

Ford F-150 Recall Expands

Ford is expanding a recall of its F-150 pickup trucks to about 1.2 million vehicles. The Transportation Department says it has 269 reports of airbags suddenly deploying in the vehicles produced in the 2004-2006 model years. Ford's move came after mounting pressure from federal authorities, news reports said.

Ford previously said it would repair airbags in about 150,000 affected trucks, news services said, but the company said there were no reports of crashes caused by the problem. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said there were 98 injuries, including some serious cases.

All-electric Nissan Leaf Deserves Some Props

The 2011 Nissan Leaf was rolled out earlier this year as an affordable all-electric, no gasoline car designed to be green and useable.

Another new electric vehicle that has made a splash, the Chevrolet Volt, has a supplemental gasoline power source. The Leaf is powered solely by grid electricity, which charges its 24-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack.

The Leaf is an attractive four-door hatchback, as opposed to some funky, far-out looking thing that screams "I'm green, but I'm also a geek."

The design language is, thankfully, not much of a departure from other Nissan models.

The Leaf has proprietary batteries developed by Nissan and NEC mounted between the wheels and under the floor. They generate more than 90 kilowatts of power, and the electric motor turns out 80 kilowatts— giving the Leaf a 0-60 mph time of less than 10 seconds. To conserve its battery, the Leaf has a top speed of 90 mph.

If you have an iPhone, Nissan is offering an app that will allow drivers to check on remaining mileage, set timers for charging or to set the timer to activate climate controls.

The big issue with the Leaf is its limited range. Nissan says you can go 60 to 120 miles on a full charge. That's not bad, but many drivers will not feel comfortable with that kind of limitation.

Therefore at this point, it's probably best to view the Leaf as a niche vehicle, for those who live perhaps in urban areas and limit their driving to spots within their city. Or suburbanites who are only running errands nearby. If you are a commuter logging 20-30 miles or more one way, this vehicle would cut it a little too close for comfort for you.

It's unlikely that you'll want a car that can't take you from Atlanta to Macon and back without recharging for a few hours.

That said, Nissan still deserves props for coming up with some technology that moves the needle when it comes to developing transportation that gets us off our gasoline dependency. Let's hope they continue to hone that technology so that it can hold broader market appeal.

Because by pretty much every other measure, this is a very good car.

It seats five fairly comfortably, rides smoothly and has all other creature comforts that you would expect in a nice mid-market car.

The Leaf is priced at $32,780 2011, but qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit and a Georgia tax break of $5,000.

The car takes electricity from either a 110-volt, a 240-volt or a 440-volt plug—but the 110 is the only one you probably have at your home or can find on the road conveniently.

But buy a Leaf and Nissan contractors will come to your home to set you up with a 240-volt charging station. Nissan also hopes that up to 10,000 240-volt charging points and up to 250 440-volt quick-charge points will be built across the country over the next year or two. Seems a bit unlikely.

The Leaf gets excellent fuel economy, with EPA ratings of ... ha! just checking to see if you were still awake.

Buick Regal is Sleek and Luxurious

Buick seems to have made all the right moves over the past few years.

First of all, it has focused on making quality products.

Its most recent lineup addition, the 2011 Regal, is no exception. This midsize sedan offers luxury and performance.

It follows the Enclave crossover and the LaCrosse sedan, vehicles that have banished the old notion of Buick being the brand of the old geezers.

That notion is now as outdated as typewriters.

Another good move was resisting the temptation to change the Regal's name. It had been on hiatus for six years, and while maybe not everyone loved the previous Regal, enough people knew it and liked it to justify sticking with that moniker.

Whatever your opinion of the last version of the Regal was, it's a safe bet that you'll like this one much better.

It's built on the platform of the Insignia sedan, which is made by Opel, a General Motors European brand.

Yet another good move by Buick: it offers Regal with one trim level, CXL. Keep it simple.

There is a base 2.4-liter, 182-horsepower four-cylinder engine, but you can also get a turbocharged 2.0-liter, 220-horsepower four-cylinder, which the test drive model was. Both are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, but you can choose a six-speed manual with the turbo if you prefer.

The turbo also offers the Interactive Drive Control System, which lets you choose from three driving modes: Sport, for the most performance; Tour, for driving long trips; and Standard, the ordinary mode.

The Regal's fuel economy numbers are 18 mpg city, 28 highway for the automatic six-speed to 20 and 32 for the manual.

The Regal offers a solid package of safety features, including dual stage front airbags, front seat side impact airbags and head curtain side airbags standard. Also standard are antilock brakes and electronic stability control.

For comfort and convenience, there are keyless entry, foglamps, seven-speaker stereo and leather interior among the standard features.

The design is where the Regal scores a lot of its points. It's sleek and sculpted - a friend even commented that it looked something like a BMW. Perhaps that's owed to its roots in Germany, where some of the key work on the Regal was done. Features like the signature taillamps and integral rear lip spoiler just add to its good looks. The 18-inch aluminum wheels are standard, but 19-inch rims are available.

The Regal ranges in price from around $27,000 to around $34,000.

Add the Regal to the recent Buick winning streak.

VW Touareg has Improved Fuel Efficiency

The Volkswagen Touareg has been redesigned for 2011, and the result is better fuel efficiency and improved handling.

This luxury SUV has an eight-speed automatic transmission and, according to VW, is 450 pounds lighter than the first-generation model.

The Touareg offers a 225-horsepower turbo-diesel V-6 and a 280-horsepower V-6, with each linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard.

Fuel economy now ranges from 16-19 mpg in the city and 23-28 mpg on the highway. Give credit to VW for recognizing that this is an important factor in buyers' decisions these days, even those who are looking at SUV.

Additionally, VW now offers a Touareg Hybrid with 375 horsepower.

VW says one of the most noticeable changes to the exterior of the Touareg is the clear division between the grille and front air dam. The Touareg now also has LED headlights and taillights, just like those found in its Audi luxury brand.

Chrome accents highlight the length of the doors.

On the interior, there is now more room in the backseat, about five inches more. It also reclines easier now.

Unfortunately, that ease of operation is not found throughout the Touareg, as you'll still see a few things where it looks like an engineer said "yes, someone could do this with the touch of one button, but instead, let's make them go through three steps."

The standard 6.5-inch touchscreen DVD navigation system shows 3-D images with major landmarks, and there's a seven-inch multifunction display that synchs with a 60 GB hard drive.

The interior is, as usual with VW, finely crafted, with its leather accents. VW says the start-stop button, electronic tailgate, ambiance lighting, panorama sunroof, and bi-xenon headlights are available features. VW also says the park distance control and Area View system, which employs four cameras to provide a 360-degree view around the vehicle, is also available and keeps the Touareg safe from scrapes and dents. A rearview camera, 12-way power seats, and 18-inch wheels are standard. Optional are 19- and 20-inch wheels, Vienna Leather, wood trim, and a 12-speaker, 620-watt Dynaudio system.

The Touareg's safety mix includes rollover sensors that trigger side curtain airbags when needed and antilock brakes as well as an electronic stability system with traction control. With the 2011 Infiniti G37, scintillating driving performance comes standard.
It features three body styles: sedan, convertible and coupe, which the test drive model was. There's also an all-wheel drive version, the G37x, which has enhanced handling.

The coupe is powered by a 3.7-liter V-6 engine that makes 330 horsepower and 270 pounds-feet of torque. The powerplant is linked to a seven-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual is optional.
The G37 coupe has new front styling, in which the fog lights have been moved from inside the headlights to the lower fascia and there's a Limited Edition trim that's new for this model year.

On the inside, the G37 coupe seats four and comes with standard leather seats with eight-way power adjustments in the front, single-zone automatic climate control, and a six-speaker stereo system with MP3 jack. There's an iPod-compatible 11-speaker Bose stereo, Bluetooth streaming audio, and moonroof that are optional. Infiniti says the available 2.0 or 9.3 GB Music Box hard drive can be accessed by a USB port in the center armrest, and it helps organize your audio files internally, and a seven-inch LCD touch-screen navigation system with Infiniti Voice Recognition is also optional.
The coupe's styling is dynamic without being overly dramatic. On one test drive session, another motorist actually pulled out a camera at a stop light to snap a picture of the G37.

The interior design is equally attractive, a mix of high tech and classic luxury.
Fuel economy is very good, with an EPA rating of 19 mpg city and 27 highway. In a week of combined driving, we got 28 mpg, which was very pleasing.
For driving pleasure, it's hard to beat the G37. It takes curves exceptionally well, accelerates sharply and brakes precisely.

The test drive model was priced at $46,975; G37s range from $36,000 to $58,000.

The G37 coupe is an outstanding value for those seeking luxury and brilliant driving dynamics.

Ford Tells Customers to get Personal with Their Fiestas

Ford, which has been among the leaders in the automotive industry in emphasizing fuel economy over the past few years, is now saying that good gas mileage doesn't have to be boring.

The Blue Oval is now touting its new customization options for its Fiesta subcompact. Ford says the three new packages aim to give customers more ways to personalize their fuel sippers.

"We're trying to make fuel economy fun," said Lew Echlin, Ford's global car marketing manager, in an interview with The Beat. "This package will have the richest personalization options of any of our vehicles. We realized that we should allow more customization choices to more of our buyers."

Ford says the new packages build on the success of the current personalization choices Fiesta customers have today, with nearly 40 percent purchasing at least one accessory. More than 26,000 Ford Custom Accessories items have been purchased by Fiesta owners.

In relaunching the Fiesta last year, Ford started the Fiesta Movement, in which a group of selected drivers got to drive, and pretty much live with, a Fiesta and share their impressions with the company.

One key finding that Ford gleaned from that experiment is the level of connection people have with their subcompacts.

Fiesta drivers, Echlin said, often live out of their vehicles, so it was important to give them options that would fit their lifestyles.

“The Fiesta customer loves accessories and personalization. These packages help the customer make the car more tailored to his or her tastes,” he said.

In a news release, Ford cited a recent study by the Specialty Equipment Market Association which found that accessories drive sales, with the availability of accessories influencing more than 1 million new vehicle sales each year.

So what's in the Fiesta packages?

Ford says the new premium sport appearance package takes cues from the European Focus RS with several blacked-out components that feature Tuxedo Black paint, including:

· Side mirrors

· Headlamps

· Grille surround

· License plate header

· Upper rear hatch spoiler

Ford also says the package also offers 16-inch polished alloy wheels along with improved performance when ordered with a manual transmission.

On the inside, Fiesta SEL and SES models feature high-contrasting interior accent colors in Oxford White or Race Red strategically placed throughout the interior of the vehicle, which Ford says reflects trends in fashion and home design.

Ford Custom Accessories gives owners additional ways to add their own flair to their Fiesta or to enhance functionality.

So while many buyers might be drawn initially to the outstanding fuel economy the Fiesta offers, they can also take heart in the notion of making it a little more reflective of their own personality and style.

Chevy Back in the Compact Mix with the Cruze

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is the bow tie marque's latest entry in the compact market, and it is a solid one.
Replacing the Cobalt, which wasn't all that impressive, the Cruze has better styling and a higher quality of materials.

The Cruze features a pair of four-cylinder engines, a 1.8-liter that makes 136 horsepower and a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine that makes 138 ponies. The latter offers 148 pounds-feet of torque.
The Cruze comes with a six-speed transmission, both automatic and manual are available.
There are four trim levels from which to choose: LS, LT, LTZ and Eco, which the test drive model was.
The styling of each is better than that found in its predecessor, the Cobalt, with a sleeker exterior and an improved interior.

On the inside, you get eight-way manual adjustable driver seat, 60/40 split rear seat, six-speaker stereo with CD player and satellite radio and OnStar.

Options include remote vehicle start, leather seating, power driver seat, heated front seats, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB/iPod port, 18-inch alloy wheels, sport-tuned suspension, automatic climate control, navigation system and sunroof.

For safety, the Cruze offers 10 airbags, antilock brakes and an electric stability system with traction control, all standard.

You'll find plenty of storage space - 15 cubic feet - in the Cruze's trunk.
The test drive model had the manual transmission, which probably won't be a big seller because many of today's drivers don't know how to drive a stick, and even those who do often don't want the hassle of doing it.
The tester was an Eco, as mentioned above, which was touted as being extra fuel efficient. Its EPA ratings are 28 mpg city, 42 highway.
In a week of combined driving, though, we were only able to get 26 mpg, which was somewhat disappointing.

The Cruze ranges in price from around $16,500 to around $23,000. The tester had a sticker price of $19,750.

The Cruze is a solid entry in the compact market, with many upgrades from its predecessor vehicle.

Audi A8: An Awesome Package of Luxury, Performance and Power

Spend a little time with the newest version of the Audi A8 and you begin to wonder what can be thought of next by the makers of large luxury sedans.

This car is absolutely loaded in virtually every way you could assess it: performance, luxury, safety and technology.
Audi has made the A8 larger, adding to its length by three inches and its width by two inches. As a result, the interior is even more comfortable.

The powerplant has been beefed up, too, with the 4.2-liter V-8 engine cranking out 372 horsepower, which is 22 higher than the previous generation. Audi says the 0-60 mph time for this model is less than 5.7 seconds - astounding for a car this size.
The engine is linked to a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, and the Quattro all-wheel drive system is standard.
Fuel economy has improved by about 15 percent, to 17 mpg city, 27 highway.
If you really want to examine the performance aspects, you can check out the adjustable driving modes, which include comfort, dynamic, auto and individual, the latter allowing you to personalize your preferences in transmission, suspension and steering.

As for safety, the A8 offers eight airbags, antilock brakes and electronic stability control with traction control as standard features. Optional are the blind-spot warning, night-vision and lane departure-warning systems. Adaptive cruise control is also offered, allowing the car to sense potential collisions and begin braking to reduce the impact.

Besides all of its great engineering, the A8 offers fun aspects, too.
The rear seat entertainment system features dual 10-inch screens and a DVD player.
The Bang & Olufsen stereo with 19 channels and 19 speakers and more than 1,400 watts of power makes you feel like you are listening in a recording studio.

There's a panorama sunroof that is functional as well as decorative. It can convert sunlight into electricity and generate energy to run a ventilator that allows fresh air to reach the cabin.

The seats are 18-way power, heated and cooled, with Alcantara leather. But that's not enough. There is also a massage function. The driver and front passenger can get a rubdown on the upper, mid or lower back. And it feels pretty doggone good.

On the outside, Audi continues to convert its vehicles' headlights to the stylish pearl-necklace type of LED lights that originated on the R8 supercar. LEDs are now used on low beams, high beams, signals, markers and cornering lights. Audi says the cornering lights can be controlled by the navigation system, which informs the lighting controller in anticipation of turns.

Audi's Multi Media Interface system provides the car with a high level of intelligence.
One example: we were running a little low on fuel, so the car asked if we would like some suggestions of where nearby fuel stations are, then provided a list.

This car, clearly, is not for those who are financially challenged. Prices start around $79,000 and range to about $87,000.

But with all this, who needs an entertainment system at home, or a masseuse?
